Careers Education, Information, Advice And Guidance Entitlement

The College Policy is based on the assumption that ALL students have an on-going entitlement in terms of the careers provision provided, regardless of race, gender, religion, ability, disability, social background or sexuality.

Careers education at Ilfracombe Arts College is delivered through clearly defined lessons within the PCRE programme to all students from Year 7 to 11 inclusive. Lessons are planned to develop Career Skills in Self Development, Career Exploration and Career Management. Within the Sixth Form delivery is through a variety of channels including tutorial activities and special events. The taught careers education programme is working towards the learning outcomes specified in the National Framework for Careers Education and Guidance.

The Careers Library is located in 4B3 and is open to students before and after school and at break and lunch times. Mrs Marks will help students to access the resources effectively. This will include accessing computer programmes which assist in careers guidance (e.g. KUDOS and Launch Pad), relevant websites e.g. UCAS and accessing prospectuses.

Students will be informed how to access KUDOS from their home computers and advised on appropriate other on-line resources which can be used for career research.

All students will have equal access to accurate, up to date and impartial information free from bias and stereotyping. Students are assured of confidential support and guidance.

The Connexions Adviser is available at specific times. To make an appointment for careers interviews students should see Mrs Marks. Parents are invited to attend. The Connexions Adviser will help you to develop a Career Guidance Action Plan. Students felt to be in need of support will also be offered careers interviews. For other types of support students can access help from a Connexions Adviser through their tutors.

Students will be given support and guidance to help them with important transitions, e.g. subject choices for GCSE, Post 16 options, university applications, job seeking. Visits to or from relevant employers or institutions will be arranged at appropriate times, including further and higher education.

Destination information will be made available to students to assist in their own decision making.

In Year 10 students will spend a week during the Summer Term on Work Experience. Students will be supported throughout the programme to ensure a valuable experience. Sixth Form students requiring Work Experience will be assisted in finding placements.

Students will receive guidance on producing CVs and personal statements.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of work-related learning activities whilst at Ilfracombe College.

Where relevant, academic subject links with Careers will be fostered.

Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance provision will be regularly evaluated and reviewed annually, The Partnership Agreement between Careers South West and the College, and that between the Devon Education Business Partnership and the College will be reviewed and amended based on this review process. The development of other partnerships will be fostered.

Whenever you wish to talk about your future plans, your career ideas or your school courses, you are always welcome to come along to the Careers Library. You will always receive confidential, unbiased support, information and guidance.
